Overspill
Support
Overspill lets Safari pages spill into the empty strip on the iPhone Duo's external display. Here's how to set it up and what to do if something doesn't look right.
Set it up
- Open Settings › Apps › Safari › Extensions and tap Overspill.
- Switch on Allow Extension.
- Under Permissions, set All Websites to Allow. (You can limit it to specific sites instead.)
- Open Safari on the external display, open Safari's page menu and choose Overspill. A small ON badge shows when it's active.
The app itself includes an interactive guide for these steps.
Frequently asked questions
I turned it on and nothing changed.
Overspill is designed for the iPhone Duo's external display, where Safari leaves a strip beside the page. On displays where Safari doesn't reserve a strip, there is nothing to fill, so the extension has no visible effect. Also check that Overspill is allowed on the website you're viewing (Settings › Apps › Safari › Extensions › Overspill).
A website still looks narrower than the screen.
Some sites pin a header or footer to the screen (a "fixed" or "sticky" element). Safari sizes those to the original page width, so they can stay narrower than the rest of the page while Overspill is on. The rest of the page still fills the screen. Switch Overspill off from the same menu to restore the site exactly as designed.
A menu button isn't where I expect it.
With the overlay on, small buttons that would sit under the camera slide to the left so you can tap them. Sites build their menus in many different ways; if one looks wrong, please let us know which site it was (see below).
How do I turn it off?
Choose Overspill from Safari's page menu again, or switch the extension off in Settings › Apps › Safari › Extensions.
The setup guide says a step is still waiting.
The guide only ticks a step when it can see that you really did it. It asks Safari whether the extension is switched on, and it notices when Overspill runs on a website and when you switch the overlay on from Safari's page menu. Tapping a row in the guide opens Settings or Safari for you, but it never ticks a step by itself. If a step stays unticked after you did it, reopen the app so it can check again.
Does Overspill collect any data?
No. See the Privacy Policy.
